India's Kidambi Srikanth stormed into the semi-finals of the 2025 Canada Open Super 300 on Friday.
The former world No 1 toppled the top seeded Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei 21-18, 21-9 in straight games to book his spot in the final four.
Srikanth was in control right from the start as he opened up an 11-7 lead in the first game. Though the Chinese Taipei shuttler fought back to level things up at 15-15, Srikanth managed to hold his nerve and close out the game 21-18.
The second game saw Srikanth extend his dominance in the contest. Chou Tien Chen failed to counter his strokeplay and surrendered tamely 9-21 to send the Indian through to the semi-finals.
Srikanth will next face off against Japan's third seed Kenta Nishimoto in the semi-finals.
Shiryanshi bows out
Earlier in the day, Shriyanshi Valishetty bowed out of contention after a women's singles quarterfinal defeat to Denmark’s Amalie Schulz on Friday.
The 20-year-old Indian, ranked 75th in the world, put up a strong fight but ultimately fell short against world No. 69 Schulz, who clinched the match 12-21, 21-19, 21-19 in 53 minutes.
Despite taking the opening game comfortably, Valishetty was unable to sustain her momentum as Schulz fought back with sharper net play and tactical lifts that turned the tide in the second and third games.
Valishetty had earlier impressed in the round of 16 with a straight-games win over world No. 45 Letshanaa Karupathevan of Malaysia, beating her 21-15, 21-14 in just 35 minutes on Thursday night.
This quarterfinal finish marks one of Valishetty’s best performances at a Super 300 event, signalling her rising potential on the international stage.
