Liverpool became the stage for a historic day in Indian boxing at the World Boxing Championships 2025, as the country claimed two golds, a silver, and a bronze. Jaismine Lamboria (57kg) and Minakshi Hooda (48kg) were crowned world champions, while Nupur Sheoran (+80kg) took silver and Olympian Pooja Rani (80kg) returned with bronze.
Jaismine Lamboria seals gold
The 24-year-old Jaismine stunned Olympic silver medallist Julia Szeremeta of Poland in a tense final, clinching India’s first gold of the tournament. Szeremeta started aggressively, backed by strong crowd support, but Jaismine adjusted her approach in the second round, using counterpunching and her longer reach to turn the bout in her favor. She secured a 4-1 split decision, marking a career-defining victory.
“This medal is the result of a year of relentless work after my Paris 2024 disappointment,” Jaismine told Olympics.com after her win.
Minakshi Hooda adds another gold
India’s celebrations continued later in the day as 24-year-old Minakshi Hooda edged Kazakhstan’s Paris 2024 bronze medallist Nazym Kyzaibay 4-1 in the women’s 48kg final.
With her win, Minakshi and Jaismine became the first Indian champions under the aegis of World Boxing, the sport’s new governing body.
Nupur and Pooja complete medal haul
In all, three Indian boxers reached the finals. Heavyweight boxer Nupur Sheoran fought a close contest in the women’s +80kg final against Poland’s Agata Kaczmarska. Despite her height advantage, Nupur was drawn into close exchanges, with Kaczmarska’s aggressive style proving decisive. The Polish boxer edged the bout 3-2, leaving Nupur with silver.
Earlier, Olympian Pooja Rani secured bronze after a hard-fought semifinal against England’s Emily Asquith in the women’s 80kg.
With two golds, a silver, and a bronze, India finished the tournament with four medals, highlighting the growing depth and strength of women’s boxing in the country.
